IEC 60364-7-703 standard is a safety fortress and protection design specifically designed for sauna rooms. Unlike hammam constructions, shower cabins, or steam rooms, the primary cause of damage in saunas is not water splashing, but the exceptionally high thermal destructive power emitted by the resistance sauna stove, burning the piping. The sauna's volume is divided into zones like Zone 1, Zone 2, etc., similar to the rules for bathrooms. Furthermore, considering that temperatures can reach 125°C at the ceiling and radiant heat in the area closest to the stove (Zone 1), all plastic-based and flammable plumbing and piping structures are left beyond the doorways.

What is periodically measured in a sauna room?

  • Thermal Resistant (Non-Flammable) Cable and Insulation Measurement:
    In the Zone area, visual and electrical data checks are performed to ensure that the material near the stove (heater) area or extending towards the ceiling provides resistance to high temperatures (at least 120-170°C equivalent to asbestos) and contains silicone or Teflon.
  • Special RCD Testing and Device Insulation:
    Unlike the electrical load that powers the stove, the RCD circuit breaker mechanism mounted on the panel assembly has a minimum load. Its operation at a current duration of <30mA is calculated using reaction simulation.
  • Heat Corridor (Zoning) Limits Around the Stove:
    It is checked whether the installation plan has been followed. It is visually determined that the switches or thermostat electronic equipment are located in Zone 3, the furthest zone from the stove.
  • Wooden Frame and Ground Grounding Dimensions:
    The stove's iron structure is measured and meggered to ensure that the connection to the installation, and if present, the equipotential bond of its outer surface profile to the main busbar, is precisely registered without ohmic deviation.

Absolutely not allowed! Due to indoor thermal limits, manual control equipment such as electrical switches or fuses must always be located outside the sauna room (as a standard requirement).

In a sauna room, lighting or heat-resistant sensor components must be connected using a SELV (Seamless Power Supply) method, either in a structure that can withstand temperatures up to 125 degrees Celsius or in a cool area (usually the lower half) that is least likely to be reached by the ceiling/stove.

Since the room is humid, authorized personnel will need to be satisfied that the insulation of these types of heating materials and control terminals meets at least IP24 protection standards.

All panels are secured, excluding the load carried by the devices, and also protect human life (factors affecting life safety). It is subject to a fast-response RCD relay operating within a <30 mA limit and must remain functional.
