Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) are critical components that protect sensitive electronic devices in your switchboards by capturing and grounding momentary voltage surges caused by lightning or power surges. The IEC 61643 series covers both manufacturing quality testing and periodic field condition verifications for these devices.


In many facilities, even though Type 1 or Type 2 SPDs are installed, the indicator window on the device has turned red and it has lost its protective function. In this case, your control panel becomes an easy target. AES Innovation measures and documents the true operational health of your SPDs with thermal camera and megger tests.

SPD Cartridge Health and Coordination Tests

Our Surge Arrester Inspection Protocol:

  • Cartridge Status Indicator Check:
    Each SPD module's mechanical or electronic status window is individually verified visually and with a device to be either green (healthy) or red (expired/burned out).
  • Varistor Leakage Current Measurement:
    Whether the aging-increasing leakage current in a metal oxide varistor (MOV) poses a thermal threat is monitored with a sensitive clamp meter.
  • Coordination (Type 1 + Type 2 + Type 3 Levels):
    The coordination distance and decoupling coil are calculated between Type 1 (lightning current) in the main panel, Type 2 (overvoltage) in the floor panels, and Type 3 (thin protection) in the appliance socket.
  • Ground Impedance Connection:
    To ensure the SPD can dissipate the captured impulse current to ground without resistance, it is examined whether the PE (protective conductor) connection is routed via the shortest and lowest impedance path.

Even when providing protection, the SPD (Surge Protection Device) does not interrupt the flow of electricity. The red indicator means the device has experienced a surge and exhausted its protection capacity. It no longer protects you and must be replaced immediately.

If the cable between Type 1 (main panel) and Type 2 (floor panel) is shorter than 10 meters, the two SPDs can interfere with each other's operation without the addition of a decoupling coil (inductor). Testing this coordination is a critical point in the AES report.
