IEC 62305 specifies different mesh spacing requirements according to the protection level (LPL I–IV) determined by the risk analysis of the structure: the highest level of protection requires the densest (narrowest) mesh spacing. The denser the mesh, the greater the probability of lightning strike and the safer distribution of current. Therefore, the adequacy of a mesh system is measured not only by its 'existence' but also by its installation with the correct spacing and cross-section. During periodic inspections, the mesh geometry, connection continuity, and corrosion are evaluated together.
