According to the Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings and Article 53 of the Planned Areas Zoning Regulation, the installation of lightning rods conforming to TSE standards is mandatory in certain structures. IEC 62305 Standard: Lightning Arresters and Risk Analysis
IEC 62305 is an internationally valid lightning protection standard, which is implemented in Türkiye as TS EN 62305. This standard consists of four parts: General Rules (Part 1), Risk Management (Part 2), Protection of Buildings Against Physical Damage (Part 3), and Protection of Electrical and Electronic Systems in Buildings (Part 4). The standard defines lightning protection levels (LPS I, II, III, IV) and mandates a specific risk analysis for each building.
Risk analysis determines the necessary level of protection by evaluating factors such as the geographical location of the structure, the keraunic level of the region (frequency of lightning strikes), the characteristics of the structure, the value of the equipment inside, and the density of people. During occupational safety inspections by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, serious penalties are imposed on systems that do not comply with the IEC 62305 standard, especially in facilities containing flammable and explosive materials.
