IEC 60364-6 is the main standard defining how low-voltage electrical installations should be visually inspected and which tests should be applied in what order, both before initial commissioning and periodically during operation. The systematic order of testing is crucial: first, de-energized tests (insulation resistance, continuity, polarity) are performed, followed by energized tests (loop impedance, RCD tripping, voltage drop). Skipping this sequence endangers both the operator and the plant equipment.

What steps does the verification process consist of?

  • Visual Inspection:
    Before power is supplied, a physical check is performed on the cable color coding, junction box covers, panel labels, IP protection class, and fire barriers.
  • Protective Conductor (PE) Continuity:
    Whether the grounding line reaches the socket or machine housing without interruption is verified by a low-current (200mA – 25V DC) continuity test.
  • Insulation Resistance (Megger Test):
    The insulation barrier between phase-neutral and phase-PE is proven to be intact with a minimum strength of 1 MΩ (at a test voltage of 500V DC).
  • Loop Impedance (Zs) and RCD Tests:
    After the line is energized, it is measured whether the fault current is strong enough to trip the fuse/RCD within the time stipulated by law.
