Air Termination (Catch End) Controls
Short answer: Air termination checks verify the location, number, and condition of lightning arresters (arresting rods and tips). The lightning arrester system's ability to protect the entire structure is evaluated within the framework of IEC 62305.
Aerial termination elements are the first component to initiate protection by ensuring that lightning strikes these ends rather than the structure. Catch rods, tension wires, or mesh netting perform this function.
A missing, corroded, or improperly positioned lightning rod leaves unprotected areas on the roof; a lightning strike in this area could directly damage the structure.
What is involved in Air Termination Control?
- Location and number of catching tips/rods
- Assessment of the scope of protection (angle/rolling sphere)
- Corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.
- Protection of metal equipment on roofs
- Continuity of connection to down conductors
How is the scope of protection determined?
Whether a containment system actually protects the structure is evaluated using the methods defined in IEC 62305. The most common method is the 'rolling sphere' model: a sphere of a radius depending on the protection level is assumed to roll over the structure, and all points of contact with the sphere must be protected by containment points. Protection angle and mesh methods can also be used. Rising metal equipment on the roof, such as chimneys, air conditioning units, and antennas, should also be evaluated and protected with additional containment points if necessary. The periodic inspection verifies that this coverage is maintained.
Legal Basis and Accurate Assessment
The air termination system is evaluated within the scope of the periodic inspection of lightning protection installations and documented with a TÜRKAK accredited report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the catching tip placed?
They are placed at the highest and most at-risk points of the roof in a way that provides coverage.
Will the air conditioner/antenna on the roof be protected?
Elevated metal equipment should also be evaluated and, if necessary, protected with additional catching points.
What is the difference between this and an active lightning rod?
IEC 62305 is based on passive lightning arrester systems; active (ESE) lightning arresters are subject to separate national regulations.
