The IEC 60364-7-710 standard defines specific requirements for electrical installations in medical areas within hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities. IEC 60364-7-710 classifies medical premises into three groups: Group 0 (non-medical equipment – waiting room, administrative office), Group 1 (external medical equipment – patient room, examination room, physiotherapy), and Group 2 (vital equipment – operating room, intensive care unit, catheter lab, dialysis). Group 2 premises require an isolated power system (IT medical), an isolation monitoring device (IMD), a power transition of 0.5 seconds, and additional equipotential bonding (0.2 Ω). This classification serves as a fundamental reference in the design of UPS, generators, and ATS systems.

What does a Healthcare Facility Electrical Inspection Include?

  • IT Medical System and Isolation Monitoring (IMD) Control: In Group 2 medical facilities, isolated power supply transformer, insulation monitoring device (IMD) function test, alarm systems, and automated fault detection checks are performed.
  • Equipotential Bonding and Grounding Measurements:
    The equipotential connection resistance of all metal components, piping, door frames, and medical gas installations to the busbar is measured. The resistance value should not exceed 0.2 Ω.
  • Continuous Power and Transition Time Tests:
    Power transition times for UPS, generator, and automatic transfer switch (ATS) systems are measured. Compliance with Class 0.5 (±0.5 sec), Class 15 (±15 sec), and Class >15 requirements is verified.
  • RCD, Insulation Resistance and Thermographic Control:
    Residual current protection devices (RCDs) function tests, cable and panel insulation resistance measurements, hot spot detection with a thermographic camera, and all visual inspections are performed.

In healthcare facilities, periodic inspections of electrical installations must be carried out at least once a year, as required by law. A six-month inspection period is recommended for Group 2 medical areas such as operating rooms and intensive care units. Additionally, IT medical systems and IMD devices require monthly functional testing.

In critical areas such as operating rooms, it is vital to prevent power interruptions in the event of an initial ground fault. The IT medical system galvanically isolates the grid using an isolation transformer and only triggers an alarm in the event of an initial fault – the power is not cut off. This prevents critical equipment from shutting down during surgery. IEC 60364-7-710 mandates this system for Group 2 premises.

Operating rooms, intensive care units, catheterization laboratories, delivery rooms, dialysis units, burn treatment units, and anesthesia rooms are considered Group 2 medical areas. IT medical systems, additional equipotential bonding, and a power transfer of 0.5 seconds are mandatory in these areas.

The equipotential resistance of all metal components and protective conductors at the busbar is measured with a low-resistance ohmmeter. According to IEC 60364-7-710, the resistance value should not exceed 0.2 Ω. Connection points should be checked at least once a year.
