Arc Flash PPE Categories:

Energy level: 4 cal/cm²

Category 1 PPE is lightweight protection used in low-voltage systems (600V and below), providing safety at an energy level of 4 cal/cm². A Category 1 PPE package consists of a lightweight arc flash suit, standard gloves, goggles, and a basic helmet. This category, being the most cost-effective, provides adequate protection in low-risk environments.

Energy level: 8 cal/cm²

Category 2 PPE is standard protection used in medium-voltage systems (600V-5kV), providing safety at an energy level of 8 cal/cm². A Category 2 package includes an arc flash suit, insulated gloves, goggles, a helmet, and face protection. In most industrial facilities, Category 1-2 PPE is sufficient.

Energy level: 25 cal/cm²

Category 3 PPE provides intensive protection at an energy level of 25 cal/cm² and is used in high-voltage systems (5kV-15kV). A Category 3 package includes a thick arc flash suit, double gloves, protective helmet, goggles and visor, face shield, and insulated shoes. While expensive, it is mandatory in high-voltage environments.

Energy Level of 40 cal/cm² and Above

Category 4 PPE provides maximum protection at energy levels of 40 cal/cm² and higher, used in environments with very high voltage and intense arc hazards. A Category 4 package includes an extra-thick arc flash suit, double gloves, full head protection, goggles, visor, protective pants, and special footwear. In this category, workers may experience restricted movement and greater discomfort.
