The IEC 60364-7-702 standard sets out strict construction and application limitations for electrical equipment that may be found in swimming pools, fountains, shallow pools, and surrounding wet areas. Because body resistance is minimal in these areas, a leakage current passing through the body can directly lead to fatal shocks. The pool perimeter is a mechanical and electrical project that must be completely waterproofed. Standards classify this perimeter into Zone 0 (inside the pool), Zone 1 (2m horizontal distance from the water's edge), and Zone 2 (1.5m from the end of Zone 1), thereby limiting the type of power supply (SELV) that can be used for the pump, outlet, and fixtures.

Critical Inspection Process for Pools and Fountains

  • Zone Analysis and Socket Control:
    The physical distance between fixtures, socket control units, and junction boxes is measured in meters according to their Zone class. It is verified that there is no intentional 220V installation in Zone 0 and Zone 1 areas.
  • Inspection of Protected Circuit and SELV Transformers:
    The functionality, capacity, and Zone 0-1 off-zone isolation of AC 12V (or DC 30V) SELV split-wound transformers, which are vital for in-pool floodlights, are examined.
  • Engine Room and Pump Panel RCD Test:
    The residual current protection relays (≤ 30mA) of the motor pumps located in the same area as the pool balance tanks in the basement are subjected to a response-trip test using special test equipment.
  • Additional Equipotential Circle Measurement:
    The equipotential bonding of metal handrails (ladders), water pipes, insulated floor reinforcement, and diving towers to the main busbar is measured using micro-ohm resistance.

Absolutely forbidden! Only devices powered by a Safe Very Low Voltage (SELV – maximum 12V AC or 30V DC) source are permitted inside the pool (Zone 0).

The control panels that drive the pumps, filters, and chlorination devices are exposed to high humidity. To protect living organisms, the primary power line of all pumps must be equipped with a Type A/B residual current device (RCD) with a maximum tripping current of 30 mA.

No devices or power sources with 220V voltage are allowed within the 2-meter (Zone 1) boundary of the pool. For mobile event organizations, adherence to a 3.5m+ safety barrier corridor from the pool is mandatory.

This process involves electrically connecting grab ladders, jumping frames, and stainless steel pipe accessories that may come into contact with water and human skin to a common ground source to eliminate the voltage difference.
