The IEEE 1584 standard calculation method is an internationally accepted scientific method that allows electrical system designers and engineers to mathematically calculate the amount of thermal energy (incident energy) released if a short circuit occurs around electrical panels, switches, and transformers. The IEEE 1584-2018 version, compared to previous versions (2002, 2015), has increased the accuracy of calculations by using more precise measurements, larger datasets, and formulas derived from real araboretum experiments. The IEEE 1584 standard calculation procedure begins by first calculating how much current in amperes (A) would flow if a three-phase short circuit occurred in the facility's electrical network. The fault current calculation depends on the transformer's power rating (kVA), primary and secondary voltage, cable type, ground resistance, network supply characteristics, and the system's configuration operation.
When calculating fault current, the IEEE 1584 standard is based on three-phase symmetrical current; however, single-phase faults can also occur in industrial systems.
