Electrical Safety in Mobile and Portable Units

IEC 60364-7-717 Standard Technical Guide

Broadcast/TV vehicles, mobile health buses, and mobile minimum food kitchen vehicles are examples where flexible power cables are attached to massive generators. How are generator grounding and vibration protection configured within the vehicle body?

The IEC 60364-7-717 standard governs the electrical installations of portable units such as medical treatment vans, broadcast rooms (OB vans), mobile offices, and mobile kitchens that are subsequently installed in a vehicle body or container for civilian use. Your units, which are connected to the site in generator mode or via instantaneous cabling to an external grid, are meticulously mapped by AES Innovation engineering, addressing both mobile safety standards and electric shock safety risks.

Because a vehicle's tires prevent electricity from passing to the ground (PE), if the vehicle's chassis is not fully coiled to the system, the potential for electricity leakage from the 220V mains (the discharge of surface-level energy when a medical device inside is touched) can be fatal.

What are the safety measures for mobile units?

  • IT/TN System Analysis According to Protection Classification:
The circuit connection insulation values of the current transformer and generator insulation structure inside the vehicle (especially in power centers for healthcare and IT broadcasting equipment) are tested.
  • Measurement of Trunk Equipotential Relationship:
The vehicle frame floor and the shelves/tool boxes inside are tested and approved as being perfectly connected to each other via RCD (Residual Current Device) busbars, either by soldering or main terminals.
  • Impact/Vibration Damage and Armor Insulation Test:
Openings that may occur in the sheaths of thin-stranded portable flexible cables and in socket/plug terminals due to constant road vibrations on highways are detected using an ohmmeter.
  • Automatic Cut-off or Separation Generator Confirmation:
When a device is installed from outside the building, it must also be connected to the same ground and main circuit breaker as the internal generator. This is a simulation to ensure that the substance reacts to a control line (<30mA).

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about safety in mobile, portable operational vehicles, such as trailer-based food/TV or inspection trucks.

Yes, the plug can be inserted into the socket, but to check for leakage to the vehicle's outer metal surface, the vehicle plug chassis PE connection must be tested, provided that the welding building connection has either an RCD Type A/B or its own isolation transformer assembly panel.

In autonomous mode (field-isolated), the in-vehicle generator can maintain its own closed protective ring by using only the vehicle's steel frame as its reference (zero point) and engaging the equipotential without directly inserting a rod into the damp ground in the external area.

Never. Because road conditions and vibration shocks can constantly rupture a single thick core, only fine braided, fully flexible (flex-rubber) standard lines are used.

If the vehicle is to connect a device or transfer power to a civilian area outside, it must absolutely have a chassis-protected, independent rated voltage connection to the locked cover on the output line. An RCD (Residual Current Device) of <30mA must be provided.
