Container, cabin, or trailer-type battery energy storage systems (BESS) integrate AC switchgear, power conversion systems (PCS), and high-voltage DC battery racks within the same housing. This configuration requires separate treatment of AC and DC components in arc flash operation and accurate modeling of the fault current behavior of inverter-based sources.
Sections evaluated at BESS
- AC interface and switchgear at the network or plant connection point.
- PCS's AC output section and transformer
- PCS's DC input section and DC coupling boards.
- Battery racks and rack cutters
- Auxiliary service panels (cooling, fire suppression, control)
Accounting approach
IEEE 1584-2018 defines incident energy calculation for three-phase AC systems, at voltages between 208 V and 15 kV and frequencies of 50/60 Hz. Single-phase and DC systems are not included in the model; the standard only refers to methods in the literature (Ammerman, Das, Doan, Klement) for DC (clauses 4.11 and 4.12). The AC interface and switchgear sections of the BESS are calculated within this scope.
The fault current contribution of inverter-based sources is limited and varies over time; this contribution is modeled using data from the PCS manufacturer. DC sections (battery banks, DC side of inverters, PV arrays, DC distribution) are not calculated using IEEE 1584. In these sections, incident energy is calculated separately using DC methods from the literature and reported separately from AC results; the methods and assumptions used are clearly stated in the report.
If the system is to be operated under different grid conditions (e.g., trailer-type units transported to different sites), calculations are made for the minimum and maximum grid short-circuit power, and labels are prepared according to the most unfavorable scenario; the conditions to be checked before site installation are listed in the report.

To reduce the event energy
The calculation results are used not only for selecting PPE but also for reducing risk at its source. The report provides panel-specific recommendations; commonly applied methods include:
- Reconfiguring protection settings to take event energy into account.
- Quick start (maintenance mode) settings activated during maintenance.
- Arc detection relays (light and current sensing)
- Remote on/off and remote drawer switch operation.
- De-energizing DC sections before maintenance by isolating them at rack and module level.
Working without power always takes priority; working with power is only permitted in justified cases and with work permission.
The scope of AES Innovation
We conduct arc flash analysis end-to-end, including data collection, modeling, event energy calculation, reporting, and labeling. Reports can be prepared in Turkish, English, or bilingually. For systems to be commissioned abroad, reports and labels can be prepared in English. Frequently Asked Questions
How is the fault current of a PCS modeled?
The fault current magnitude and duration are modeled using the data provided by the PCS manufacturer; if this data is unavailable, this is explicitly stated as accepted in the report.
Is a single test sufficient for portable BESS?
If the range of network conditions to be connected is defined, a single envelope study can be performed; prior to on-site installation, it is checked that the connection conditions are within this range.
How are battery rack results reported?
The results for DC battery sections are reported separately from AC results, along with the DC method and assumptions used.
