The IEC 60364-7-701 standard specifies restrictions on electrical installations in bathroom and washroom areas containing bathtubs and showers. Wet areas are among the places with the highest risk of electric shock due to high humidity, water contact, and bare skin. The standard classifies the area around bathtubs and showers as Zone 0 (inside the bathtub), Zone 1 (above and around the bathtub), and Zone 2 (within 0.6 meters). For each zone, the minimum IP protection class, operating voltage (SELV), and residual current device (RCD) protection requirements for electrical materials are clearly defined.

Zone Classification and Insulation Rules

What does a wet area plumbing inspection include?

  • Zone Control and Equipment Placement:
    The locations of lighting fixtures, switches, and sockets within Zones 0, 1, and 2 are measured. Precise, millimeter-accurate measurements are taken to ensure that the sockets are definitely outside the boundaries of Zone 2.
  • Additional Equipotential Bounding Test:
    The equipotential connection of hot and cold water pipes, gas pipes, metal towel rails, and other exposed conductive bodies in the bathroom is tested by measuring resistance at the micro-ohm level.
  • Additional Protection: RCD Function Verification:
    Simulation measurements are provided to ensure that the installation is protected from the main panel by a Type A or higher Residual Current Device (RCD) with a protection current of ≤ 30 mA.
  • Analysis of SELV (Low Voltage) Systems:
    Specifically, tests are performed on AC 12V or DC 30V SELV power supplies for equipment such as ventilation fans, lighting, and jacuzzi motors in Zones 0 and 1.

Yes, but there are strict restrictions. 220V grounded sockets can only be installed outside of Zone 2 (at least 60 cm away from the edge of a bathtub or shower) and must have 30 mA RCD protection.

Depending on the humidity level in the bathroom, fixtures in Zone 1 should be at least IPX4 (splash-proof), while those in general use areas with water jets should be at least IPX5.

If a leakage current in the water heater or plumbing system spreads through the metal water pipes, electricity can mix with the shower water. Equipotential bonding protects the person from this shock by short-circuiting the metal parts and grounding them.

Washing machines or similar electrical appliances can be located outside Zone 2, with a separate line running through them, completely isolated from the bathtub and shower area.
