Periodic Testing of Pressure Vessels and Installations

Air Tank, Piping and Pressure Resistance Safety Guide

Compressor air tanks and massive steam boilers are essentially powerful civilian bombs containing potential blasting. Are hydrostatic pressure tests and wall weakening analyses conducted to prevent boiler explosions?

AES Innovation

Critical Limits of High Pressure and Corrosion Trap

Boilers and pressurized chemical containers, which store air systems that ensure production speed in factories and workshops, are subject to very strict (hydrostatic) inspection requirements under the 'Work Equipment Regulation'. These steel giants, constantly exposed to internal air/water expansion strokes, experience fatigue over time at the welds and in the wall thickness. With AES Innovation inspectors, we minimize all pressurized unit explosion risks in your facility.

An explosion caused by wear and tear on a thin-walled tank due to humidity, temperature variations, and vibration can create a shrapnel effect, resulting in tragic consequences that endanger the lives of workers. If the safety valve is functioning and able to release that immense stress inside, the system is robust; AES tests prove this.

Hydrostatic (Water/Liquid Pressure) Burst Analysis

What is the testing method for air and gas tanks?

  • Hydrostatic Overexpansion Test:
This is a procedure to test a boiler underwater for any cracks or condensation by filling it with pressurized water at 1.5 times the working pressure, as is a general rule in vessel standards, and leaving it for a certain period of time.
  • Non-destructive Wall Thickness (Ultrasonic) Measurement:
In active liquid/gas tanks where hydrostatic testing is technically harmful or dangerous, the degree of corrosion and wear of the metal is determined in microns using ultrasonic sound waves.
  • Safety Valve Automatic Opening Pressure:
When the compressor refuses to stop, these manual, spring-loaded valves, which save the tank from being torn apart by air, are documented to spurt out a 'Set Pressure' instantaneously; the valve pressure is measured with a pressure gauge.
  • Metallographic Representation of Welds and Joints:
Invisible stress fractures in the delicate vascular pathways where the domed sheet metal caps and the main lateral cylinder are welded are detected using endoscopic examination instruments.
WHY AES INNOVATION?

We are transforming unseen possibilities into visible solidity.

A boiler bursting at its weakest point during a 10-bar test only results in a water leak; but an explosion due to air during production destroys the entire room. Exceeding standards is not a choice, but a moral obligation. As a laboratory accredited to ISO and TS EN norms, we are on the field. AES Innovation Our team continues to ensure your safe production route by isolating your facility and personnel from pressure vessel damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Detailed FAQs about boiler explosions for those operating facilities using compressors and steam/heating tanks.

Yes. Expansion tanks, autoclaves, and submersible booster pump systems, which contain air, liquid, or gas in a leak-proof shell while being subjected to internal pressure above 0.5 bar, are all subject to periodic pressure testing.

The container is tested by filling it with liquid (water, etc.) because water is an incompressible fluid, so if the container explodes, it will only crack, drip, and release water; air, on the other hand, is an expanding mass, so if the container explodes, it will cause destruction like a powerful shrapnel bomb.

If liquid/water intake in a technological facility would damage the equipment (e.g., natural gas piping systems, etc.), Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) can be applied with standard permission to create a cover wall thickness map using ultrasound and calculate fatigue phases.

Failure or corrosion of safety valves, and a faulty pressure gauge (needle/dial) reading that fails to indicate the system's limits will directly place the system on the 'Serious Defect that Makes Use Unsafe' list.
