12V or 24V systems (ELV/SELV) are frequently preferred for decorative purposes because they reduce the risk of electric shock to zero. However, the basic engineering principle (P=V*I) applies: the lower the voltage, the higher the amperage that passes through the cable to transmit that power.


12V cables that are not selected with the required thickness will quickly melt and ignite in concealed suspended ceilings, turning red like a pomegranate. AES analyzes this fine line with transformer (driver) thermal load testing, thus documenting the safe operation of the systems.

  • Cable Cross-Section / Current Carrying Analysis:
    If a 12V LED line carries 40 Amperes of current, it is calculated whether the cross-section of the LED is sufficient to carry this current without causing a fire.
  • Short Circuit Protection Reactant:
    This eliminates the risk of not being able to detect a short circuit due to the decreasing voltage at the secondary output of the transformer (driver) as the distance increases.
  • Driver Heat Absorption:
    The danger posed by transformers, especially those tightly packed into suspended ceilings without ventilation gaps, is monitored using thermal cameras.
